back trip

i think i might agree with aaron rose.

in his video interview: portrait of the artist as a beautiful loser, he speaks about how the twenty first century not having a distinct cultural identity yet, that the past ten years have mostly been a decade-long retrospective.

a rehash of everything past.

something i feel like i'm very good at doing, in my own head.

especially when i get to be bed bound, by choice, and by influenza pain, and retreat into my own constructed headspace, not believing at the moment that the feeling of sickness will ever end.

mostly these take place while staring.

at my laptop.

at a screen, underneath a quillow, on a couch.

and for some reason i've never taking to watching anything current.

no news really, no mtv.

it's like i am obsessed with the past. and judging by the intense revival of anything vintage, i'm not the only one.

but for me, the epitome of this past-junkie obsession is movies.

even the most recent film i saw was made in dagenham. made to look like it was made in the late sixties.

and even when i did have the choice to watch anything, having mostly valid excuses to be horizontal, i decided to focus on the pubescent haze that was the mid to late nineties, for me, watching my girl 2, trainspotting and natural born killers.

i've also kept clicking "previous" on blogs like alternative nation, another back-trip fetish curated by someone who didn't reach their peak wearing plaid, neon or ying yangs.

like the writers at flavorpill.

and yes, maybe this happens to most people who have too much time on their hands.

but mostly, it's just amazingly satisfying to watch these movies on newer technology, see the images, and finally understand the cultural significance, without the burden of unanswered teenage questions, only answerable by yet-to-have experiences.

it's a relief, to finally see all these cult movies, people and fashion choices from an educated perspective, and not only as a series of bright, confusing visuals and voices.

and out-of-context flashbacks.

haha :) i meant to put an explanation link in there richard, but couldn't find anything that did it justice!

basically a quillow is a quilt/pillow, or actually a small quilt that folds up into a square pillow.

and, if you flip it around, the pillow fold-up pocket becomes a cosy enclosed space for your feet.

normal blankets just don't cut it for me anymore now!
